The Governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite, signed on Wednesday (Nov. 12) a financing contract with Badesul to support Be8’s pioneering hydrogen plant project. Selected under the state’s Public Call No. 01/2025 of the Green Hydrogen Production Chain Development Program (H2V-RS), the initiative marks a milestone in Brazil’s energy transition. At the same event, Be8 received its Preliminary Installation License from the state environmental agency Fepam, paving the way for construction.
Governor Leite praised Be8’s leadership under president Erasmo Carlos Battistella, highlighting the company’s innovation and entrepreneurship. He stressed the government’s role in accelerating clean energy projects and reinforcing Rio Grande do Sul’s position as a national leader in renewable energy. “We must encourage bold initiatives that allow the state to produce and compete globally,” Leite said.
The project involves an investment of R$ 38.7 million, combining state support and Be8’s own resources. Located in Passo Fundo, alongside the company’s new ethanol plant, the facility will produce green hydrogen and establish Brazil’s first refueling station for heavy cargo transport powered by renewable energy. Operations are expected to begin in 2027, with the goal of testing hydrogen’s performance and competitiveness against diesel.
According to Battistella and Be8’s energy transition director Camilo Adas, the project will serve as a practical evaluation of hydrogen’s viability, reducing CO₂ emissions by nearly 400 tons annually and laying the foundation for a future logistics chain of hydrogen refueling stations across the state and country. The initiative aligns with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, aiming to diversify the energy matrix, attract investment, and generate jobs.
